craig carroll interview

Craig has been one of the fitscape team of expert trainers for several years.  He obviously likes reaching the top of mountains (see picture!) and we thought we should find out a bit more about him.  In a few quiet moments during his normal busy day training high profile sporting athletes (including international rugby, football, and track and field athletes) he replied to our quickfire Q&A.  Here's what he said:

Have you always been interested in keeping fit and healthy?
Yes, I have always been involved with sport and fitness. Actually was on the brink of joining the Army (pre-uni) and at Uni I used to train for Rugby (club/uni) 6 days a week. I love training, it definitely keeps me in a brighter mood.

Did you play any sports at school?
Rugby, athletics and cricket.

Do you have a favourite gym exercise?
Yes, the deadlift. If I could have just two exercises to do for the rest of my life it would be deadlifts and pull-ups.

Would you rather workout in a gym or a park?
A gym; probably the spit ands sawdust type. I also love using the athletics track too!

What is your go to breakfast when you know you have a hard day ahead?
Regardless of the day; hard or not. Always have protein, either eggs or some sort of meat (chicken/beef/lamb) or fish. Alongside that I'll have some porridge too. I have a big appetite for a small person.

What’s your favourite post-workout snack?
Lean red meats or chicken. Normally with a good quality protein shake.

You have to invite a sports personality to dinner, who would you invite?
Oh... This is difficult! Probably Clive Woodward, Muhammad Ali and Brian O'Driscoll.

What would you cook if for them?
Oh... Erm... I'd probably ruin the night if I got adventurous. Maybe keep it simple with a great steak, green seasonal vegetables and with a bottle of merlot to accompany the meal.

Do you have any advice for a fitness newbie, or somebody coming back to fitness after some time off?
Get cracking! Its going to be hard and it always will be.  But two things will keep you on track:
1. Set a goal - defining why you want something will help you achieve it;
2. Train with somebody - doesn't have to be a Personal Trainer, but just someone (get a friend) who can help push and motivate you. Never be afraid to ask for help. Even top athletes still have coaches. I do too!

What do you do to relax after a busy day at work?
Sleep and eat. Maybe read a book, but mostly sleep!

What is your favourite type of holiday, and where?
I've recently been bitten by the surfing gods and now really want to go on a surfing holiday to hone the skills.

Do you have any vices?
Pies! I like pies.... Mash and gravy alongside... Heaven! And also partial to a Guinness too.

Do you have a favourite quote or mantra?
Practice doesn't make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect.

What is the best advice you’ve ever been given?
Never claim to think that you know it all. Asking for help is as important as struggling through alone. Two heads are always better than one.
